A LIFETIME OF LEARNING: Sensei Carey Lutz and 40 Years of Ingredients

Forty years. That's how long Sensei Carey Lutz has been collecting what he calls the “ingredients” — Shukokai karate, Tiger Schulmann's fight conditioning, Hung Gar kung fu, Wing Chun, Muay Thai, Silat, Kali.

He started at nine. Became a National Champion in Empire State Kumite. Trained under Danny Schulmann back when the school was still called United American Karate. Got nominated to the Black Belt Hall of Fame in 2003.

His philosophy hits different: a true martial artist should execute a technique and explain the physics behind it at the exact same moment — “like music.” The bass and the words, together.

Now in his fifties, he's passing the ingredients on. The domino effect continues.
