(MCU EXCLUSIVE) Guardians of the Galaxy 3: Actor's Comments Spark Speculation about Rocket's Fate

(MCU EXCLUSIVE) Guardians of the Galaxy 3: Actor's Comments Spark Speculation about Rocket's Fate

A potential spoiler for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 has surfaced, suggesting that Rocket Raccoon may meet his demise in the upcoming film.

Director James Gunn will bid farewell to the Marvel Cinematic Universe with Guardians 3, as he focuses on his newly acquired DC Universe. Gunn's brother, Sean, has played a larger role than expected in his movies, serving as both Yondu's right-hand man Kraglin and the stand-in actor for Rocket Raccoon's motion capture.

Throughout the Guardians franchise, Sean Gunn's performances involve him standing and crawling around to create the character's movements. However, as he plans to leave this work behind, Rocket Raccoon's future in the MCU becomes uncertain.

In a recent interview with Empire Magazine, Gunn revealed that playing Rocket has become more challenging as he has gotten older, and that the upcoming third installment will be his last time providing motion capture for the character, calling it his "swan song as Rocket."

Despite director James Gunn's previous avoidance of addressing the possibility of Rocket's death in the film, Sean's comments have added fuel to the speculation that Rocket may meet his end in the upcoming movie. The official plot of the film revolves around saving Rocket's life, and the trailers and promotional posters have only heightened fans' suspicions that Rocket's story arc will come to an end in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

Will Guardians 3 Bring the Death of Rocket?

Granted, Sean Gunn’s departure from the Rocket character is partially due to his brother ending his MCU run with Guardians 3. Even still, it would certainly be the most full-circle moment one could ask for if Rocket Raccoon went out by sacrificing his life to save the Guardians, just as his friend once did for him.

Rocket's character growth throughout the Guardians franchise has been significant, transforming from a self-centered bounty hunter to a loyal and protective comrade. Although he may still grumble, he now values his family more than his own interests.

The movie's promotional materials suggest that Rocket will confront his past, highlighting the contrast between his pre- and post-Guardians personas. While it remains unclear whether he'll survive the ordeal, the Guardians of the Galaxy series finale could mean a permanent farewell to the cosmic team's members.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will debut in theaters on May 5.
