ADVERSITY: Nathan Ingram — From The LES Streets to Martial Arts Legend

Before DAOS Magazine, there was a thin kid from the Lower East Side getting bullied in the Smith Projects — who became the first Black member of the Ghost Shadows, vice president of the Royal Javelins at 16, and eventually the founder of the #1 martial arts brand in the world.

Nathan Ingram's story doesn't start in a dojo. It starts on the streets of the Lower East Side in the 1960s and '70s, where survival was the first martial art he ever learned. Bullied as a kid, he did what a lot of young men from the Smith Projects did — he found family in the streets. The Ghost Shadows. The Royal Javelins. By 16 he was vice president of the Javelins, moving through gang wars that most people only read about.

Then came 1973. A shooting that ended his street life in a single night — and started something else. Nathan made a vow that day: train every single day. Not for a belt. Not for a trophy. For his life.

Fifty-plus years later, he still does.

From Sensei Angel Crespo's Shotokan to Master Hector Martinez to Goju under Sensei Walter Tigner — every inch earned, nothing given. Nathan built his foundation the hard way: show up, shut up, train. No shortcuts, no excuses, no days off. That discipline carried him from the projects to the head of a global martial arts movement.

Today, deadlyartofsurvival.com is the #1 martial arts brand in the world — 25 editions of DAOS Magazine deep, 139K strong on Instagram, 30 million views a month. And it all traces back to that vow in 1973.

“God is my strength.”

Part 1 of the founder's story, in DAOS Magazine 25th Edition. This is where DAOS comes from — not a boardroom, not a marketing plan. The streets of the LES, a shooting that could have ended everything, and a man who decided to turn pain into discipline and discipline into a legacy.
