Fairfield Halloween Store Shooting Leaves One Dead and Six Hurt: the Safety Lesson for Crowded Stores

A Halloween shopping trip turned into a tragedy in Fairfield, California. One woman was killed and six other people were hurt when gunfire broke out inside a Spirit Halloween store at the Solano Town Center during peak evening shopping hours, according to Fairfield police.

Emergency responders answered calls around 8:30 p.m. as shoppers fled the store. Some people escaped through an employee hallway and forced open gates to reach safety. Police identified the woman who died as 31-year-old Constance Hages, a mother of four whose relatives confirmed she was pregnant at the time of the incident. She died from her injuries at the scene. Three additional victims — ages 16, 19, and 32 — were admitted to local medical centers in critical condition, while a 23-year-old man remains in critical but stable condition. Two other men sustained gunshot injuries, received treatment at a nearby hospital, and were subsequently discharged.

Fairfield police believe the shooting was a targeted incident involving one suspect, though investigators have not publicly identified the intended target or disclosed a possible motive, and no arrests had been announced in the latest reports. Detectives are reviewing surveillance footage and other evidence, with the FBI's Sacramento office assisting in the investigation. The shooting disrupted Halloween weekend activities at the shopping center, which canceled its scheduled Mall-O-Ween trick-or-treating event. The mall remained open, but the affected store was expected to remain closed while the investigation continued. Police have urged anyone with information to contact the Fairfield Police Department at 707-428-7600.

The DAOS take: this is the public-safety lesson we repeat because it saves lives, and it applies just as much in a store as it does on a crowded street at night. When you walk into any shop, mall, or crowded space, take two seconds to note the exits — the front door, the back hallway, the emergency exit — before you need them. If the energy shifts and something feels wrong, leave early; do not wait to figure out what is happening. If you hear gunfire, get behind solid cover, get out of the area by the safest route, and do not stop to film. Keep your people close, keep your head up, and trust the feeling that says it is time to go. A mother of four went shopping on Halloween weekend and did not come home. The best outcome in a situation like this is the one where you are already gone before it turns.
