Marvel Studios is reportedly considering a potential recast of actor Jonathan Majors, who is currently under investigation for assault.
Majors, known for his recent Marvel debut as Kang the Conqueror in Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania, faced legal charges in New York in March. As he was set to play a major villain in the MCU, the possibility of a recast is being discussed internally.
Despite having one unreleased Marvel project, Season 2 of Disney+'s Loki, the recasting could be executed with relative ease. Kang was touted as an "infinite Thanos," so the situation has been a talking point behind the scenes at Marvel.
Will Marvel Replace the MCU's Kang?
The Cosmic Circus recently reported that Marvel Studios is considering recasting Jonathan Majors as Kang the Conqueror due to his recent arrest and assault charge. While Marvel has not yet made a final decision on the matter, the studio has started preparations for a recast in case they decide to move on from Majors.
Majors is still scheduled to appear as Kang in Season 2 of Loki, but his future beyond that remains uncertain. Previously, he was slated to star in Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, but filming won't begin until after Marvel has made a decision on his future with the franchise.
The potential recast of Majors presents a significant challenge for Marvel Studios, as Kang is a pivotal character in the future of the MCU. However, it's understandable that the studio would explore contingencies for the role, given the uncertainty surrounding Majors' future. Marvel reportedly has an idea of the "kind of actor" they would want to bring in if necessary, but no action can be taken until the investigation is complete and a verdict is rendered.
Loki Season 2 is set to debut sometime later this year on Disney+.
