Steven Yeun, Former Walking Dead Star, Breaks Silence on Major Marvel Role

Actor Steven Yeun has spoken out about his role in the highly-anticipated Marvel Studios film, Thunderbolts.

The film centers around characters with a villainous past. The star-studded cast includes Sebastian Stan, Florence Pugh, David Harbour, and Harrison Ford, with Ford taking over the role of Thunderbolt Ross in Captain America: New World Order following the passing of actor William Hurt.

While the details of Yeun's role have yet to be revealed, rumors have circulated that he may be playing the powerful character, Sentry, whose abilities rival those of DC's Superman and could pose a formidable threat to the newly-formed Thunderbolts team.

The former "The Walking Dead" Star Explains Why He's Joining the MCU

During a recent interview with Empire, Steven Yeun opened up about his decision to join the cast of Thunderbolts. He revealed that one of the main reasons for his involvement is the opportunity to work once again with director Jake Schreier, with whom he previously collaborated on the upcoming Netflix series Beef.

While Yeun admitted that joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe was not explicitly on his bucket list, he was drawn to the story and Schreier's vision for his character in Thunderbolts. For Yeun, the chance to work with a talented director and be a part of a compelling narrative was too good to pass up.

"The intentions of the particular character that they wanted me to play were very clear, and that’s what drew me to the film.”

Will Steven Yeun Stay in the MCU?

Steven Yeun is undoubtedly a fantastic addition to the already star-studded cast of the upcoming Thunderbolts film in the MCU. However, based on his initial comments about joining the Marvel universe, it appears that his tenure may be short-lived. While working on a project with a talented director is always an attractive proposition, it could also suggest that Yeun may not be interested in pursuing other opportunities within Marvel.

Steven Yeun's Rumored Sentry Casting

Furthermore, considering the possibility of Yeun playing Sentry or his dark alter-ego, the Void, it's likely that his character's arc may only be limited to this standalone film. Despite his growing popularity, thanks to his voice acting in Invincible and a standout performance in Nope alongside Keke Palmer and Daniel Kaluuya, it remains to be seen whether Yeun will become a permanent fixture in the MCU or if his story will come to a conclusion with Marvel's answer to The Suicide Squad.

Thunderbolts is set to premiere in theaters on July 26, 2024.
